The Age of Discontent
This collection of articles, published in El País or Arquitectura Viva in the past decade, bears witness to the profound transformations that have taken place over the course of it. Combining chronicles of events with reviews of books which analyzed those changes in the world, the volume gathers theories and histories to paint a portrait, in fragments, of an age of discontent which is also one of disenchantment and discouragement, as is perhaps to be expected from an era of decadence in the West. The first section goes through the social conflicts brought on by the economic crisis that arose in 2008; the second looks at current anxieties about identity, risk, or the future, closing with the mutations produced by the pandemic; and the third covers the most recent convulsions of the planet, up to the Ukraine war, in the context of a growing geopolitical struggle and a menacing climate change that lays bare the absence of global governance.
