Aesthetics and Matter
Stylistic and aesthetic decisions are as connected to building techniques as they are to the materials used, and this small book gathers articles about both. After a reflection on the nature of artistic language, the first section looks at the succession of stylistic trends during the two decades that flanked the turn of the century, expressing a certain skepticism towards the carousel of spectacle, consumption, and fashion; the second covers the same period from the angle of materials and techniques, showing the continued soundness of traditional practices in contemporary practice and the expressive dimension of matter; the third and last book tackles the economic and ecological concerns triggered by the crisis and climate change, which have given rise to an architecture that is more austere, sustainable, and responsible, but in no way less determined to make its mission of service inextricably bound to the pursuit of beauty.
