The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has awarded its Gold Medal of 2024 to David Lake and Ted Flato – who in 1984 founded Lake Flato Architects in San Antonio (Texas) – in recognition of their commitment to controversial environmental and sociopolitical endeavors. “The projects they envision have raised the collective consciousness surrounding our climate crisis while simultaneously captivating a broad audience with buildings that are both beautiful and sustainable.”
Their works include the Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs (Mississippi), which was built to resist future disasters in a zone devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the 3D-printed House Zero in Austin (Texas).
