Carmody Groarke in Hamburg

The London firm Carmody Groarke has created a single-story 1,700-seat temporary theater and ticket office close to the Großmarkthalle, a landmark concrete construction of the German architect Bernhard Hermkes which is now an event and hospitality space in the city’s busiest wholesale market for fresh produce. Because of the pavilion’s drum shape, it is not necessary to interrupt the circulation of delivery trucks still arriving daily at the commercial premises, and its enclosure of corrugated aluminum sheets reflects the industrial origin of the neighborhood.
