Two museums – one for science, the other for art – are joined by a youth center, a book mall, and restaurants and cafés in forming a cultural complex in Shenzhen, China. Designed by Mecanoo, the Delft-based firm led by Francine Houben, the 95,000-square-meter construction is 400 meters long, 50 wide, and 25 high, and breaks up into four buildings rendered in the same formal language, with the same materials and red facades. The blocks expand as they rise to touch one another at the top, creating covered public spaces and entrances in between. These passageways connect Longcheng Park to Longgang business district. The interiors are predominated by exposed concrete structures combined with wood and metallic details in dark tones.
