A Chronicle of Architecture

The Age of Spectacle + Time of Uncertainty

Luis Fernández-Galiano presents a selection of articles that he wrote between 1993 and 2006 for El País, whose weekly architecture page he was in charge of during those years. Jointly titled Alexandrine Years, evoking both their chronological scope and their chronicle nature, the two volumes of 512 pages apiece portray the vicissitudes of architecture in the course of the transition from the 20th century to the 21st. The first tome, The Age of Spectacle, covers the final years of ‘yestercentury,’ a period of optimistic prosperity best expressed in the much publicized Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao. The opening years of the current century are encompassed in the second volume, Time of Uncertainty, which reflects the unrest following 11 September, as well as the sense of fragility produced by military conflicts and climate change. Intertwining architecture with art, philosophy, economics, or politics, the texts are illustrated with over 2,500 images, and through them march almost 2,000 protagonists of projects and debates of the period in question. Rafael Moneo called the essays “small masterworks,” describing them as “well constructed, brilliant in their choice of metaphors, informed, subtle,” and stating that “whoever in the future studies what has been the history of architecture these past years will have to go through this wealth of writings.”
