Torres Roa & Miguel Caballero: Ca Na Maria in Santa Eulalia del Río
Photos: José Hevia
In Santa Eulalia del Río, a municipality in the eastern part of the island of Ibiza, stands this one-family, two-story dwelling designed by Laura Torres Roa and Alfonso Miguel Caballero. The prismatic volumen (29 x 8 x 3.5 meters) rises on rustic land that has a significant slope and is fragmented into terraces by stone walls. Protected against the sun by blue boxes, the facade openings which seem to be arranged randomly ensure adequate ventilation and cross views. The main floor is divided into four functional units arranged in a succession: entrance-kitchen-dining room / terrace-living room / library-bedrooms / guestroom or home office. In the basement are the building services and auxiliary spaces for work in the food garden and the rest of the property. The architectural language used comes from local tradition, with white loadbearing walls, ceramic and stone floors, wooden frames, besides the front yard and the swimming pool that takes the color of the ponds that dot the island.
