Barozzi Veiga, Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels

The Barcelona practice of Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga – in collaboration with Tab Architects and Barbara Van Der Wee Architects – has won the competition to renovate the Jewish Museum of Belgium, carrying the day over the other three teams shortlisted: aa-ar – Atelier d’Architecture Alain Richard; GNIBE Archipelago – Baev – Mangado y asociados; and AM atelier Pierre Hebbelinck – Arcadis Belgium. The jury praised the winning entry as “discrete yet present and integrated into the urban fabric.” While reinforcing the cultural institution’s relationship with the Belgian capital, the scheme tries to concoct a recognizable identity through a simple and clear-cut layout of the program. At street level, wide windows invite passers-by to enter. On the ground floor are the bookstore and the café, arranged around a central courtyard. Temporary shows will be underground, and the permanent exhibition will take up four stories. The top floor features a multipurpose space for 250 people that gives onto an exterior loggia. The existing facade is maintained and crowned with a new belvedere.
