SANAA, expansion of Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney

New images have been released of the currently-under-construction Sydney Modern Project of SANAA, the joint practice of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. This is the Japanese firm's first work in Australia and completion is programmed for 2022.

The fruit of a competition held in 2015, the scheme for expanding the Art Gallery of New South Wales engages with the topography of the terrain through a series of interconnecting pavilions that open out to the environment, while descending toward Woolloomooloo Bay and Sydney Harbour. Integrated into the landscape and into the context of the existing museum, the extension includes a large atrium, green roofs, garden zones, and the repurposing of a vast underground space that was a World War II naval oil tank. With a floor area of 2,200 square meters and a ceiling height of 7 meters, it will be a showcase for large-scale artworks. The project incorporates systems for rainwater collection and solar paneling.
