Yvonne Farrell & Shelley McNamara, Pritzker Prize 2020

Associates since 1978 in the Dublin firm Grafton Architects, Yvonne Farrell (1951) and Shelley McNamara (1952) have been named the winners of the 2020 Pritzker Prize. The announcement has just been made by Tom Pritzker, president of the Hyatt Foundation. Inheritors of the best of British brutalist tradition, the Irish architects are the first in their country to receive this accolade. They are known for raising buildings with a social commitment and a powerful structural imprint where huge spans and reinforced concrete play a central role. Among their most prominent works are the buildings for Università Luigi Bocconi in Milan, UTEC in Lima, and Kingston University in London. Farrell and McNamara curated the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale and this year were awarded the RIBA Gold Medal. On the occasion of their becoming Pritzker laureates we link Antonio Lucas’s interview with them at the 3rd International Congress of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad.
