Jining, a city in China’s Shandong province, is home to this museum by the Japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa – co-founder, with Kazuyo Sejima, of the firm SANAA. The sinuous one-level volumes blur their boundaries between interior and exterior through huge roofs that stretch past the facade lines, held up by thin columns. Combining glass and locally sourced bricks, the main building organizes exhibition halls, offices, and a library around a central courtyard. The other two constructions, containing a café and a pergola, repeat the pattern of flat roofs with curving edges.
