The Olso firm Snøhetta and Copenhagen-based Werk Arkitekter collaborated in the competition-winning project for a seaside community center in the Danish city of Esbjerg, in the southwest part of the Jutland Peninsula.
Named Lanternen, the circular building is to house several water-sport clubs, boat storage, training facilities, a workshop, and social functions. Like a lighthouse, the very openly designed construction will allow visitors to enter from any angle as well as let light in.
The heart of the project is a terrace at first-floor-level terrace with two large perforations that shall serve to illuminate the ground-level workshop and storerooms.
