The Dutch firm of Rem Koolhaas will be building a new Kaufhaus des Westens department store and hotel in the historic center of Vienna, in the Museumsquartier. Ellen van Loon and Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli lead the design team that is crowning the KaDeWe with a roof garden that will give good views of the city. The main program components will be housed in two volumes: shopping in front, hotel behind. Inspiration for the facade comes from geometries of Vienna Secession architecture. This will be OMA’s first work in the Austrian capital.
