Competition for Plaza del Mar revamp in Sanxenxo

Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos

The Madrid firm Paredes Pedrosa has won the idea competition for Plaza del Mar, a square in the Galician city of Sanxenxo, and its immediate surroundings. Carme Pinós and Emilio Tuñón came in second and third. There were 35 entries in all.

The winning design, titled ‘Batea en tierra,’ includes the harbor master’s building, giving it a new pitched roof, and puts a linear pergola over the existing shops, unifying the complex. A landscaped embankment on the Plaza de los Barcos side negotiates the ground level change and links up the urban courses, adding a passage for vehicles serving the fishing port. Finally, a new shelter will accommodate events, a square volume with transparent facades and a combination of wood, EFTE, and a system of metal struts.
