Marià Castelló, Water Sports Center in Formentera

At the port of La Savina, the main point of access to the Balearic island of Formentera, is a saltwater lake that forms part of a natural park. This lake is used to anchor small fishing boats, and now also accommodates the municipal sailing school along with facilities for other nautical sports. Undertaken by the local practice of Marià Castelló, the project distributes a total area of 345 square meters in two volumes: one for classrooms and offices, aligned with the street Almadrava; and the other for a workshop and the changing rooms, facing Pasaje Balandra. At the intersection of both streets the building opens up in the form of a void. This is the main entrance, with an oblique structure that gives shade. To the south, the opaque parts unfold to form a broad platform over a minimal foundation, prefabricated and reversible, that connects the two containers of the program and recedes some meters towards the lake like a pontoon held up by stilts.

The materials used for the dry construction are mostly natural, such as wood, avoiding PVC and other potentially harmful synthetic materials. In this way, the enclosures are hygroscopic and permeable to steam, contributing to energy efficiency and the creation of a healthy interior.
