Mario Corea Arquitectos, CEMAFE in Santa Fe (Argentina)

The firm headed by Mario Corea (with Silvana Codina, Francisco Quijano, and Bruno Reinheimeres), the Special Projects Unit of Argentina’s Public Works Ministry, and the Government of the Province of Santa Fe collaborated in building CEMAFE, the outpatient medical specialties center of Santa Fe. The 11,500-square-meter complex is a diagnosis and treatment facility serving the city of Santa Fe and the center-north area of the province of the same name. The horizontal volume is organized around courtyards that provide natural light and ventilation. Construction-wise, the main challenge was the foundation, the site being land reclaimed from the river. Hence the structure of hanging slabs. Loads are transferred through a network of roof beams to just four large columns, each of which is composed of a set of twelve piles that are anchored 35 meters deep into the ground. The columns are 60 meters apart and the slabs cantilever 22 meters at the far ends of the building.

This health center was one of three works that received the highest honors – gold – in the ARQ FADEA 2018 awards, organized by Arq-Clarín and FADEA (Federación Argentina de Entidades de Arquitectos). It also won first prize in the Large Scale section.
