In the Catalonian municipality of Blancafort, in the Conca de Barberà county, stands this building by Guillem Carrera (Tarragona, 1979). Housing two different facilities, the construction negotiates a level change, consolidating the urban fabric immediately around it. The new operation provides the premises with a new entrance from the lower street, and establishes the preexisting retaining wall as a plinth, combing exposed concrete, stone, Corten steel, and wood. The building’s interior layout addresses the two differentiated uses of the complex. The home for senior citizens interacts with the natural landscape of the area and takes into account the physical activities that the residents engage in, in keeping with their respective degrees of autonomy. The day center surrounds a planted courtyard where the materials and the manipulation of natural create a calm atmosphere for the users. The materials selected contribute to thermal inertia and do not need constant maintenance. As for finishes inside, these, too, are thought out so that the elderly can enjoy a building meant to make the final years of their lives as comfortable as possible.
