Hotel Punta Caliza in Holbox (Mexico)

Macías Peredo

The firm of Salvador Macías and Magui Peredo, based in Guadalajara (Mexico), has raised this boutique hotel on the island of Holbox (which in Mayan means black hole), off the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. The heart of the project is a waterlogged courtyard, with flooded steps leading to the rooms, so the circulation elements run all the way to the edge of the 600-square-meter triangular plot. Three long simple volumes border the premises with their thatched pitched roofs. Without coming in contact with one another, the single-level constructions free the walls of structural functions by means of solid roofs of palm-clad wood which evoke the traditional Mayan house. In the narrowest angle of the project, a wooden tower contains the building services and offers views over the mangrove swamp.
