The newest Madrid project of Foster + Partners has been announced. It will transform what was a Barclays Bank office, on Plaza Colón, into a taller building for a mix of uses. Because of the choice location, at the intersection of Paseo de la Castellana and Calle Génova, the intervention is bound to have a major urban repercussion and create a new icon landmark for the Spanish capital.
The current facade will give way to one of glass and stainless steel, with a diagrid structure that will give the work a strong identity. A central atrium will ensure natural lighting for the commercial spaces on ground level and the floor above it, and visually connect them to the offices on levels 2 and 3, which are crowned by a double-height glazed sky terrace. Construction work should be finished by June 2019.
