The Barcelona practice of Jaime Coll and Judith Leclerc was commissioned to build three vertical blocks combining two usually separated programs: 47 social housing units for rent, and 20 temporary accommodations directed at the most vulnerable groups. Containing a total area of 5,570 square meters, the buildings are located at Tánger 38B-40-42 and Álava 132-138. Recently the project won the AVS Award for Best Public Housing Development in Spain in 2018, given by AVS Gestores Públicos de Vivienda y Suelo. The design generates public space with an interior street that separates the accommodations from the dwellings while linking them, and organizes the accessways and connections, making for good cross ventilation. The conditions of the various parts of the program are equalized, dignifying the dwellings at no additional cost by, among other things, eliminating differences in orientation and exposure to sun. Passive strategies for energy saving include cross ventilation and solar gain mechanisms, which in winter satisfies 23% of the demand for heating and in summer 43% of the need for cooling. This is complemented by highly efficient systems like aerothermics and a heat recovery system that works through dual flow ventilation. The project has obtained A energy performance certification.
