The opening match of the football World Cup of 2018, played between Saudi Arabia and the host country, took place in Russia’s national stadium, which was renovated by the Moscow firm Speech. Built in 1956, Luzhniki Stadium was the main venue of the 1980 Olympic Games and it recently underwent renovation to comply with FIFA requirements and host seven matches during the championship, reconfigured to increase capacity from 78,000 to 81,000 spectators and improve visibility. The running track around the play area was eliminated. Outside, the historic colonnade has been preserved with the addition of perforated metal panels designed by Art Lebedev Studio, with figures representing different sports.
