Idom, Beronia Rueda Winery

Gonzalo Tello of the Spanish engineering and architecture company IDOM has designed new facilities for the Beronia winery in Rueda (Valladolid) to address new needs of wine production and accommodate a wine tourism program, creating an attractive architectural image integrated into the natural landscape. The accessways take advantage of the slope of the terrain and are differentiated in accordance with use: a footpath for visitors and a road for trucks that partly enter the building to unload their contents directly into barrels. The slope is also used to create two levels of premises, with a clear distinction between the production area and the zone for visitors. In the process of adapting the floor plan to the topography, the interior layout separates production and bottling from storage. The production area is conceived as a single unit revolving around  a central nucleus, presided by a sculptural stairwell, and surrounding it are the laboratory, the cask room, and the tasting room, leaving the concrete tanks to one side and the stainless steel ones on the other. The structure of the winery presents six wall porticos and large concrete beams that clear a 10-meter span, which hold up double-R prefab slabs up to 14 meters long. The latter are what give the interior space and the exterior volume a unitary image, and hence the winery its identity. The finishes, mainly in wood, concrete, steel, and glass, are repeated in all the spaces, resulting in a homogeneous image for the winery.
