The Barcelona firm of Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga renovates and enlarges the Casa Ragen, current home of the music school of Brunico, a town in the Italian province of South Tyrol. Integrated into the old quarter, the project stretches along the site’s perimeter, surrounding the inner garden. With this strategy the design manages to respect the urban fabric of historic villas while enhancing and complementing the annexed building. The extension is conceived as a sober complement to the preexisting construction and rises two levels, one partly excavated and the other giving shape to the garden meant for outdoor activities. The entrance into the premises is a subtle opening in the perimetral wall that links the urban scheme with the garden space. The intervention also gives the original building a translucent new roof.
