Vázquez Consuegra, restructuring of Genéve-Cornavin train station

The Seville firm Vázquez Consuegra, in collaboration with the Swiss office Frei Rezakhanlou, has won the competition to renovate Geneva’s main railway station, located on the edge of the city’s historical center. The jury chaired by the Portuguese architect Gonzalo Byrne unanimous selected their design, which seeks to optimize how the existing station functions during the underground extension slated to be carried out in two phases between 2025 and 2050. The project gives the complex a new identity through new configurations of the open spaces around the station. The reorganization behind of the elements of vertical connection between the various levels makes it possible to create a new covered gallery along the north facade which like an urban portico homogenizes the premises and stretches the whole 400-meter length of the street. Upgrading the constituent elements of the place, new pedestrian public spaces are generated through a rearrangement of the principal traffic flows, the ultimate aim being to make public transport more efficient and eliminate private transport altogether. The proposal also aims for urban permeability by way of new passages and the revamping of old ones.
