The new roofs and perimetral enclosures of the sports grounds of Puig den Valls – a population center and parish belonging to the municipality of Santa Eulalia del Río, on the east side of the island of Ibiza – are a work of the Murcia-based practice of Manuel Costoya. The commission was divided into two phases. The first phase involved placing roofs over two preexisting outdoor grounds. The effects that light produces through them influenced decisions on formal aspects of the second phase, which involved the design of the enclosure. On the premise of near-zero consumption of energy and with the objective of maintaining an outdoors feel indoors, facades were raised using exposed white brick, 24 centimeters thick, with opaque and lattice sections alternating, depending on orientations. This ensures a high degree of natural ventilation and lighting while addressing the characteristics of the surroundings. Built with undulating aluminum sheets, the sawtooth roof faces south and lets sunlight in with color nuances changing in the course of the day. Finally, the floor of the sport courts is painted an intense blue that recalls the usual tone of the sky in the Balearic Islands.
