Selected out of 28 finalists, the Madrid firm of Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano has won First Prize in the competition promoted by the German state of Saxony to refurbish and extend the Baroque building of the Blockhaus, which dates back to 1732, to house the archive donated by the collector Egidio Marzona. This Archive of the Avant-garde of the Marzona Collection includes works of different artistic movements of the 20th century, such as futurism, Dadaism, constructivism, and surrealism. With a floor area of 2,000 square meters and an estimated investment of 20 million euros, the Archive of the Avant-garde will rise in the historic center of Dresden as a concrete cube within the Blockhaus, freeing up the entire ground floor as a flexible space for a variety of events. The design seeks to establish a dialogue between memory, embodied in the historical building, and the avant-garde, with the collection itself. Nieto Sobejano
