‘Arniches y Domínguez. La arquitectura y la vida’

Until 21 January 2018, the Museo ICO in Madrid devotes an exhibition to the life and works of Carlos Arniches and Martín Domínguez, developed both independently and jointly. Curated by Pablo Rabasco and Martín Domínguez Ruz, the exhibition gathers more than three-hundred pieces, with previously unshown documentation of the period, plans, photographs, models, and furniture.

Graduated from the Madird School of Architecture, Arniches and Domínguez worked together between 1924 and 1936, from a studio located in an office of Madrid’s Hotel Palace. The Civil War interrupted their collaboration and the dictatorship, with the exile of Domínguez to Cuba and a ban that kept Arniches from working many years in Spain.

Establishing dialogues between tradition and the new architectural models, their works were influenced by the European currents of thought, which they disseminated in the columns titled ‘La arquitectura y la vida’, published weekly in the newspaper El Sol.

Their most representative works in Madrid include the Instituto-Escuela (currently the Ramiro de Maeztu high school), and the Colina de los Chopos nursery, and La Zarzuela horse racetrack, designed with Eduardo Torroja; other notable works are the twelve road hostels based on a prototype that was systematically repeated.
