Located near the old south gate of the city of Seoul, Namdeamun is the oldest and largest market in South Korea. A work of the Dutch firm Mecanoo, the slender block designed for the insurance company Heungkok rises on a lot across the market, connecting past to present. Its sober, monochromatic look strikes a contrast with the colorful surroundings. Containing 5,900 square meters in fourteen floors of offices and stores, the building has gridded facades made dynamic by different patterns and perforated panels that provide protection against excess sunlight.
