The Lisbon-based brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus have come up with a formal play of solids and voids in this sculptural volume located in Grandola, a municipality in the Setúbal district of Portugal’s Alentejo region. With a built floor area of 670 square meters, the community center is a white monolith with deep openings carved into it to mark entrances on the facades. The simplicity of the horizontal construction outside strikes a contrast with the complexity of the inclined planes of the ceilings inside. The layout addresses program requirements, with halls for large meetings as well as for smaller groups.
